Cancer

Cancer is a disease in which some of the body’s cells grow uncontrollably and spread to other parts of the body. It can start almost anywhere in the human body, which is made up of trillions of cells. Cancer is caused by changes to genes that control the way our cells function, especially how they grow and divide

There are many types of cancer, such as breast cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, skin cancer, leukemia, and lymphoma. Each type of cancer has different risk factors, symptoms, diagnosis methods, and treatment options

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the world, but survival rates are improving for many types of cancer, thanks to advances in cancer screening, treatment, and prevention

Cancer medicine is a broad term that refers to any drug or substance that is used to treat or prevent cancer. There are different types of cancer medicine, such as:

  • Chemotherapy, which uses drugs that kill or stop the growth of cancer cells. Chemotherapy can be given by mouth, injection, infusion, or directly into a body cavity. Chemotherapy drugs are classified by their chemical structure, their mechanism of action, or their target in the cell cycle
  • Targeted therapy, which uses drugs that block specific molecules or pathways that are involved in the growth and survival of cancer cells. Targeted therapy drugs can be antibodies, small molecules, or vaccines. Targeted therapy drugs are usually given by injection or infusion
  • Immunotherapy, which uses drugs that stimulate or enhance the immune system’s ability to fight cancer. Immunotherapy drugs can be cytokines, checkpoint inhibitors, CAR T cells, or cancer vaccines. Immunotherapy drugs are usually given by injection or infusion
  • Hormone therapy, which uses drugs that interfere with the production or action of hormones that stimulate the growth of certain cancers, such as breast and prostate cancers. Hormone therapy drugs can be blockers, inhibitors, or agonists. Hormone therapy drugs are usually given by mouth or injection.

Cancer medicine can be used alone or in combination with other treatments, such as surgery, radiation, or stem cell transplant. The choice of cancer medicine depends on many factors, such as the type and stage of cancer, the patient’s overall health, the patient’s preferences, and the potential benefits and side effects of the drugs.
