What is Radiology? ☢️

Radiology is the medical specialty that uses medical imaging to diagnose and treat diseases within the body. It is divided into two main branches:

• Diagnostic Radiology: Focusing on high-resolution imaging to “see” internal structures (X-ray, CT, MRI, Ultrasound). 📸
• Interventional Radiology (IR): A sub-specialty that uses image guidance to perform minimally invasive procedures. IR allows doctors to treat complex conditions through a tiny incision, often replacing the need for traditional surgery. 🏥

Radiologists play a critical role in identifying and managing a vast array of pathologies:

• Vascular Disease: Identifying blockages or narrowing in the arteries (Atherosclerosis) or veins (Deep Vein Thrombosis). 🩸
• Aneurysms: Detecting weakened, bulging areas in blood vessel walls that are at risk of rupturing. 🎈
• Tumors & Biopsies: Locating suspicious masses in the lungs, liver, or kidneys for further investigation. 🎗️

Diagnostic Imaging & Contrast Delivery:

• The Procedure: High-pressure injection of contrast media to highlight vessels or organs.
• Hardware: High-pressure tubings, contrast media injectors, and multi-port manifolds. 💉

Vascular Access & Drainage:

• The Procedure: Creating a safe pathway into the body to drain fluid or access the bloodstream.
• Hardware: Introducer needles, J-tip guidewires, and drainage catheters (Pigtail design). 💧

Embolization & Targeted Therapy:

• The Procedure: Purposely blocking a blood vessel to stop bleeding or “starve” a tumor of its blood supply.
• Hardware: Micro-catheters for super-selective navigation and infusion sets. 🎯

Image-Guided Biopsy:

• The Procedure: Extracting a tissue sample using real-time imaging to ensure accuracy.
• Hardware: Core biopsy needles, fine-needle aspiration (FNA) sets, and coaxial introducer needles. ✂️

Biliary & Nephrostomy Interventions:

• The Procedure: Accessing the kidneys or bile ducts to relieve pressure caused by blockages.
